Guide to Hiring

Two-way radio hire for businesses can be a confusing area and when buying or hiring a new system a lot of questions arise. What manufacturer do I choose? What two-way radio solution do I choose? What’s the best solution for my budget?

To help you through the process, read our Guide to Hiring Two Way Radios for answers to commonly asked questions and solutions for common problems.

Why Two-Way Radios?

Two-way radios offer you the simplest, most effective way for your staff to communicate with each other with the added benefits of increasing safety, improving productivity, quicker response times and increasing profit.

Two-Way Radio Sectors

You want communication throughout your business to be as flexible as possible and two-way radios can provide that. Communication applications include one to one contact between individuals in small groups or a multi-channel system with one for each department within your organisation. Since they are so simple to use, every member of staff can use them and the number of handsets and channels are easily expanded to cope with your communication needs. Some ideas areas of use include concert halls, manufacturing plants, farms, shopping centres, train and bus stations, ferry terminals, etc. Have a look at a more detailed list of two-way radio sectors.

Does my Location Affect Choice of Two-Way Radio System?

Yes. Work out exactly where you will want to use your two-way radios i.e. indoors, outdoors, in a built up area, in vehicles, etc, and we will advise on the best-fit solution.

Are Two-Way  Radios Better than Mobile Phones?

There are some situations where people do use mobile phones instead of two-way radios. However, from a business perspective, two-way radios offer a much more efficient communications option. On a mobile phone, however you call someone (speed dial or address book) you must always wait as it rings out and is answered. Two-way radios eliminate this wait and speed up the communication process which could be critical in an emergency.

Because there are no payment contracts with two-way radios you don’t have a set usage time limit.

One person can communicate with a group of people simultaneously.

Two-way radios can be more resilient than mobile phones as their military specs often enable them to be used in the wet and survive being dropped on hard surfaces

During major incidents such as accidents, terrorist attacks or natural disasters, two-way radios are more likely to work as they don’t rely on a phone tower to get a signal

Two-way radios will work in areas of your place of work where mobile phone signals are weak or absent.

What Types of Two-Way Radio are Available?

There are four types of two-way radios: handheld, vehicle mounted mobile, desk top base station and repeater base station.

Handheld two-way radios are the familiar looking devices that can be carried around the workplace. Vehicle mounted mobile two way radios are fixed to the interior of vehicles such as cars, vans or trucks and rely on the the vehicle’s battery for power. Desktop base stations are connected to the mains and utilise an antenna mounted externally. Two-way repeater base stations basically boost the range of a PMR radio system and are typically used in areas with transmission or receiving problems.

Analogue or Digital Two-Way Radio?

The choice between analogue and digital two-way radios largely depends on your requirements. Certainly, digital technology is more versatile but if all you need are the features that analogue provides then there may be no need for digital.

What are Some Common Two-Way Radio Features?

Two-way radios come with a variety of features and functionality depending on the make and model:

  • Number of channels
  • Varying ranges
  • Built in intercom
  • Accessories
  • Selectable power options
  • Security features

All two-way radios must be supplied with a warranty which is an indication build quality.

What are the Costs?

All two-way radios have a set price but the price of a system depends on a number of variables such as amount of users, number of channels required, reprogramming, etc, and as such many systems have their own unique price.
