“I recently hosted a charity ceilidh event and rented radios from Scotia Radio to ensure seamless communication throughout the night. I must say that I was thoroughly impressed with their service.
From the moment I reached out to Scotia Radio, their team was incredibly helpful and accommodating. They patiently listened to my requirements and helped me choose the right radios for my event. They even went the extra mile to make sure that the radios were fully charged and ready to use on the day of the event. Furthermore, they offered me two additional radios free of charge – which I thought was very lovely of them to do so! Delivery and return was also a piece-of-cake as the team organized everything and I just needed to be at home to receive them and get them delivered back too.

“Communication in nurseries has always been a problematic area; practitioners are confined to their respective rooms providing care for their group of children. On the face of it, this isn’t a bad thing, each room is able to operate without the distraction of another room or activity. However, Little Beehive team members still need to communicate as freely as possible. Over the years nurseries have implemented different ideas and methods, some have room intercoms, others internal phone systems and of course, standing by the room door to shout through to another room… not ideal!
However, Little Beehive Nursery have recently rolled out to all settings what we believe to be the answer to nursery communication. We needed something that allowed practitioners to continue to practice on the floor, was easy to use and had minimum impact on their working day. Two-way radios were the answer!
You may have seen these before, in hotels, bars, building sites (or any industry really!) where the person in question will have a small earpiece in; super simple, but highly effective!
A four-month trial took place at our Newport nursery where, after a consultation with a care inspector and the team, we implemented 5 radios, one for the manager, one for each room senior, and one for the floating cover.
The radios are lightweight, durable devices intended for the hospitality trade, and come with a ‘push to talk’ microphone (meaning you are only heard when you activate the microphone and start to talk) and an ‘over-ear’ ear piece designed for hospitality use, their ‘over ear’ design is intended to allow the wearer to maintain full awareness and have no hearing loss while wearing it.
The radios allow for the team member to be in constant communication with other rooms at all time, even when they are engaged with a child in an activity, they are not being dragged away to answer a phone or intercom, they can have a full conversation while continuously engaging with the children of the nursery.
Another benefit that the improved communication brings is incident/accident response time. No matter where you are in the nursery, you will always have 4 other senior level colleagues ready to listen at the push of a button, and this doesn’t stop inside the nursery. The radios have a 5km maximum range and the team can continue to be in communication while on walks or trips.
Privacy was, of course, a concern to the care inspectorate and to us. Unencrypted radios can be listened to by anyone who knows your frequency. However, Little Beehive Nursery, working with Scotia Radio, set up private networks for each of our settings.
A massive thank you to Scotia Radio who have helped us through the process, we will never go back to not using them; I don’t think we could take them off the team if we tried!”

“I wanted to rent a SPOT GEN 3 from Scotia Radio prior to cycling in the Scottish Highlands in June 2016. The whole process worked well. The device arrived on time, setting it up for my individual contacts proved straightforward and my family were able to plot my progress regularly. “I started www.mountainandglen.com in 2005 after a lengthy career in the Royal Marines. We provide mountain challenge events and outdoor adventures throughout the UK, but particularly in the Scottish mountains. Safety has always been at the core of our operations and (coming from a military background) I recognise that the ability to communicate with teams in the mountains is a key part of this. We purchased a stock of VHF radios to provide this link. One of our most popular adventures is the Three Peaks Challenge. So popular in fact that in 2013 we launched the Three Peaks Challenge website to cope with demand. As we started to expand our operations following the launch of the website we identified that we needed to dramatically increase our VHF radio stock in order to cover our new events. Whilst sourcing new stocks of radios, we met with the team at Scotia Radio and the result was a no brainer! The ability to rent radios as and when required, from a local company who would deliver to our offices meant that we didn’t have to outlay thousands of pounds purchasing stock and that we had no ongoing maintenance or licensing commitments. Since that time we’ve rented from Scotia on a number of occasions and have been really pleased with the service we’ve received. Whether it’s just a couple of handhelds or multiple radios with vehicle-based units and aerials, they always supply up-to-date, functional radios with minimum fuss. “ I wanted to send you and your company, Scotia Radios a thank you for the walkie talkies that were given to the QEUH Intensive Care Unit during the Covid-19 pandemic.
At the beginning of the pandemic the ICU staff put a plea out on social media and also contacted companies to ask for help in preparation for this awful disease as they knew the difficulties other countries had competed with.
The idea behind the walkie talkies initially, were to communicate with families who were waiting in the reception area of ICU as they were not allowed in the unit. This very quickly changed as the hospital went into lockdown and the whole of the Critical Care Department became a closed unit. The only form of communication from the staff who were dressed in full PPE was via the walkie talkies to their colleagues outside the units who would deliver vital resources to the entrance of the units.
We have further developed the use of the walkie talkies in theatres to access vital equipment during surgery as again the theatres are a closed unit and this form of communication is vital.

“Scotia Radio provided the two-way radios required to communicate across the Scottish International Airshow 2016 site in Ayr. The site extends for just under two miles with the main event site lying in the centre, with the Multi Agency Control Centre adjacent. Communication between site management and the MACC is a paramount, so there can be no drop in communication. Scotia Radio provided TSIA with 30 handsets, ear-pieces, call-station and a repeater station. The one repeater station covered the entire site with ease, and line of sight was never an issue. The equipment was delivered promptly and a brief overview of the equipment was more than adequate, considering how easy it was to operate. We were provided with two long range channels, and four short range channels, all named and prepared for each handset. When you are working with a team of volunteers, it is important that everything is kept as simple to operate as possible, and Scotia’s two-way radios were just that. We look forward to turning this annual hire into a continuing relationship, and would recommend Scotia Radio to any event company.”
“We are a student run society called “Meadows Marathon” and our aim is to raise money for charity by organising running events. Our main event is in March and involves a 5k, hopefully this year a 10k, a half marathon and a full marathon. We are hoping to get 1000+ runners. The event held in October was a promotional event in which we raised money for the March event and money for charity. The event consisted of a Halloween fancy dress fun run mainly aimed at students but we did have some families involved. The event involved a 5K fun run with an unknown route! The run happened at 9.00 at night and involved 240 runners finding their way round the course with the aid of our spooky/scary volunteers. The completion of the run involved the collection of glow sticks and sweets all the way round the course. The radios were fantastic because we need very clear communication between the course marshal leaders. Without this runners may go the wrong way. The radios provided by Scotia Radio Services were brilliant and easy to use. Whenever I telephoned Scotia, was given really informative and friendly advice and thanks to the help of Evelyn (our contact at Scotia) we had a really enjoyable working relationship which ended in a successful event! We raised £1000 for charity and the rest will be used to run our event in March. ”
